“OCTOPUS’ LAND NOTES”
memories, notes, dreams
and
memorable friendship
Upon “art”, there is a mass of ”words about art” much more than a few fold-sized of its own existence.
Need of “art” is almost overwhelmed and vanished by the need of writing/ talking about the art.
It is all but impossible for adults to take “a film stand” against any piece of art as children can do well…
“Homo sapiens sapiens” have already smothered the world with the words and put the world from one shape to another with their words…
Despite this reality, art still has a power: being able to speak and communicate with its own implicit words, by enclosing words in parenthesis; and a power of “making its presence felt” by ultimately provoking to be besieged by words, but without referring to them…
After my foregoing words, I don’t want to speak about contemporary art here. However it is important to emphasize that nowadays art, across the world, is to be stimulated by the capital as an “art industry”, and this hegemonic power that determine which one will be “visible” or which one will be “invisible” belongs to the capital.
If necessary speaking on my own words, I can say that I know and believe and trust the truth under Frida Kahlo’s words: “a painting is established on the paintings which exist before itself. At some stages, some artists suspend this long work: they go off the road, throw their power in our faces, and cut the continuity line for taking a basis of themselves while creating their paintings.”
While thinking about all these, my question would be “what should I bring from Middle East to Asia, to the Indian Ocean?” Among my works which I have created while reckoning with the burden of world “art” heritage, which pieces should I carry along here/ to Maldives?
I decided to do the following: I had lived for 33 days in Maldives in 1995… Both the special traces, of which those days left on me and the accumulation of these days I have spent while coming from those days to nowadays should be set up this exhibition…
And to be here; to be here with my paintings and drawings; to seek after a “possibility” here, and have an “opportunity/ chance” here, first of all, is a memorable story of friendship for me…
In today’s world, outside of the realm of the capitalized art market which gives no respite, it is not to belittled that a friendship is able to lead to a spurt by means of the art…
